Screw understanding, the only reason they behave like pets is because it was beaten into them.
Although I suppose if you want a perfectly safe pet yukkuri that will obey you unconditionally and won't associate with wild yukkuris, this is the way to go.
The thing is this is exactly how the majority of stories where yukkuri are trained to be pets are usually portrayed.
And a lot of them have beatings and discipline too.

I've read somewhere (in a Japanese festivals page, I think) that vegetables with wooden sticks to prop them up were supposed to represent transportation for the dearly departed ancestors, to hasten their trip to the afterlife.
And since yukkuri are magical manjuu, make that as you will...

Heck, stories with 'logic pwnings tend to follow this template: 1. yukkuri does shithead thing 2. Anon 'logic pwns' the shithead 3. Yukkuri doesn't understand/ignores it 4. Anon gets physical 5. Paste flies 6. ??? 7. Profit!
I was only curious, with the 'logic pwnings' we've seen, why the 'truth' I mentioned was never used, since it seems obvious to me; Doesn't really matter to me if the yukkuri accepts it or anything, since yukkuri are only rarely affected by 'logic pwnings'.
And then there's this one, which is the exception to your template: post #27940
