One Yukkuri Place

A Thought on Badges

Posted under General

Say you have a small clan of badged yukkuri, like, about 10 or so
The type of badge is not important, for what is worth even a bottle cap is ok, as long as they consider the badge something to be proud of (like how graded yukkuri get one after working hard)
Now, let the yukkuri live their life like nothing is afoot
It could be in a controlled "wild" environment or you could feed and help them, but what matters is that they should make bonds and start making families
Now wait for them to make babies, if it's a stalk pregnancy it's better
When everyone is asleep, place a badge on each baby yukkuri (if it was a mammalian pregancy you have to wait for them to be born), and wait until these baby yukkuri become adults
By then, the parents probably made another litter, because little ones are easy
If you're fine with that, place badges on them too, otherwise try to dispose of the new babies as quietly as possible
When the new generation is old enough, have them make babies, and place badges on their babies too
After some generations have passed (assuming they didn't self-destruct), the yukkuri should consider these badges as something that "grow on their own"
Have a couple more generation pass, then, when distributing badges to the new babies, skip a few families
Since these babies never "grew" a badge on their accessory, they will be considered uneasy and probably die
Those families most definitely will be making new babies, but this time give them badges
The next time, select different families. but don't do this too often, wait a generation or so between each "miss", to avoid alarming the yukkuri
After some time, slowly increase the frequency to which unbadged yukkuri appear
If you want, you can even have badged and unbadged babies in the same family, what matters is that the yukkuri have to be scared of this "uneasy syndrome"
Keep an upper limit of unbadged yukkuri though, as they need to be an uneasy minority
As time passes, each generation will grow with an innate fear of unbadged accessories, so much so that they will try their best to have "easy" children
And so, at some point, yukkuri will give birth to babies whose accessory already have a badge

Do you think this could ever happen?

I think the babies born from mammalian pregnancy will be doomed the moment those things start thinking badge grow on their own and no badge=uneasy.

Well, when babies are first born, they don't have badges, but they are given during the night (or anyway at a time when the whole clan sleeps)
Thus, even if it's mammalian, the yukkuri know that badges will appear the next day
The babies become uneasy when badges don't grow even if lots! of days have passed

So, the goal is inducing Lamarckian evolution.

In fiction, one has the freedom of anything being possible. I just prefer the older portrayals of yus, without all the "potential creep".

Probably, but I see it differently
In other circumstances a lot of handwaving proclaiming suspension of disbelief is needed (depending on context), so you can't really do what you want
Yukkuri have already done that with makako's comics, from my point of view
Besides, older comics had the "power of belief" as an important detail, which it's not something I've seen recently (not in a noticeable way at least)

I did mean POB, but not exclusively. POB without results is delusion-or, as I termed it in another thread, delyusion. I mean the inherent ability to effect such change. If ones' headcanon allows for near-limitless potential, it's perfectly fine for them to grow badges, weapons, armor or whatever to become easy.

Yeah, I realize it's a bit unfair to think the old path to easiness by dosufication or growing a body is somehow OK, but growing a badge is outside ability. Maybe it's because I see yus as wanting parity with humankind-or becoming human as the highest expression of easiness.

IOW, don't mind me..I'm the member that rationalizes the irrational :P

Well, yukkuri might search some higher level of easiness (meta-easiness?), but the setup I hypothized doesn't really go that far (unless you want it to, of course)
Essentially, as time passes yukkuri get used to see nothing but accessories with a badge, with little ones "growing" one during the night, so when they see that badges don't grow, they get out of their comfort/easy zone
Since they want to take it easy, their power of belief unintentionally kicks in and prduces easy babies
Giving birth to a badged yukkuri would be like giving birth to a fully accessorized (i.e. easy) yukkuri, just with an added piece

It's good to discuss things you know, even if it's magical food that talks ;)

OK; I see what you mean. Probably would be fun, just for S&Gs.

BTW, thanks for your translations and collecting pools for here. Here, have a Deibu badge! :)

There's to wonder if it would be possible to abuse (heh) this development and have yukkuri grow whatever we want, like toilet seats or machine guns

Yukkuri are more fun than I though, so even if it's sometimes (read: often) tedious in the end I have a good time, so all's good
