Parent/Child Posts

Posted under General

Someone has been going around marking them, while that's a good thing, they are doing it in reverse.

Parent posts mark the original while Child Posts mark the edit. Please remember this in the future

By putting the img number in Parent Post that makes the current pic a child post of the other img.

But which one should be the parent and which one should be the child?

Usually the first post (or "page 1") of a series is the parent post, from what I've seen in other boards.

But what if its just a one-shot picture/comic and theres a translated version?

Should we make the untranslated or the translated version the parent?
Should we make the "first uploaded" version the parent?
Should we parent/child pictures with duplicates? Or should we just make a pool out of it? (I was told not to use parent/child for anything longer than 2 pictures)

When there's a two-page comic, the first page is the parent and the second page is the child.

When there's a one-page comic that's been translated, the raw is the parent and the translated is the child.

When there's a two-page comic that's been translated, remove current parent/child relations, make a pool, make the raw page 1-2 the first pages in the pool, make the translated page 1-2 after the raw in the pool, and make the raw image the parents of the translated posts if you want to be thorough.

Thats... a lot. Hopefully I'm not the only one crazy enough to work their way through everything from the beginning.

Personally, I'd prefer that any sequential images - even two-page comics - be pooled. That makes it much easier to navigate through them in order, and it makes it easy to search for a series via the Pools index.

As a bonus, pool names can be edited at any time. This means that if a user has no idea what the series' title actually is, he can make it up, and anyone can come in and change it once it's figured out what the series' title is supposed to be.

Pool two page comics as well? Hm. I guess... Naming is going to become a bitch though. Another problem for another day I guess. One-page comics are gonna be impossible to find as well.

This is the way I would do it:

Name of pool: "Pool_name (artist_tag)"
Description: "Short description here."

Ordering: All of the untranslated originals in sequence, followed by all of the translated versions in the same sequence, with any extras at the end. Translated posts should have the untranslated originals as their parent posts as well.

Example: pool #559

Except a LOT of posts, and thus comics/series, that don't have artist tags. So I've been taking liberties to give them placeholder names (the fact that most aren't even translated really doesn't help)

Example: pool #551 pool #549 pool #541 and pool #537 (is "500_yen_marisa" an artist tag?)

Honestly, I'm tempted to just make a pool for one/two picture but that would easily be the biggest pool on the site and I don't want to start it without knowing the admins won't delete it as frivolous or something.

Well, if you don't know the artist, then yeah. Again, it's fairly easy to change the name. The only difficult trick is ordering them correctly. (edit: And making sure the parent/child relationships are entered correctly.)

ex.: pool #193 "Orphan Marisa". I've renamed it to "Orphan Marisa (kimoaki)", but ordering it correctly will be... difficult.
