What are Yukkuri fans like?

Posted under General

I've wondered for a long time, 'what is everyone else on this site like?'. So, as we're all fellow fans of Yukkuri, I say we share some descriptions of ourselves just to get a feel for what the other fans are like, if anyone is interested.

I'm 21, a business student soon to graduate, I always wear dark clothing, I recently got my eyebrow and lip pierced, I love seinen anime/manga, video games like Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and Shin Megami Tensei, I'm a very naturally zen/dao kind of guy but I only use those words for description and I place no faith in either those or any other belief system/ philosophy. I'm a faithless person and I just go with the flow. I always try to be happy and have great etiquette, but I am also, secretly, a hater and a misanthrope; I try not to voice most of my opinions, though, and be lightly supportive of whatever people care to do or say.

I like yukkuris!

Also, Mariodante, I'd like to point out that you are neither zen nor dao, if you are faithless and just go with the flow. Both Zen Buddhism and Daoism are organized religious/social structures with clearly defined precepts and rules. Daoism especially has a very well-developed metaphysical universe, rules about reincarnation, and a pantheon of gods and spirits.

Basically to say you're a Zen Buddhist or a Daoist when you don't believe in the Eightfold Path / Daoist deities or principles is like saying you're a Christian but don't accept Christ is the way to salvation. You don't fit the definition of the religion and you can't be labeled as such.

I would say from your limited description a better word for you would be 'agnostic,' 'atheist,' or 'areligious.'

You're killin' me, Zidana.

areligious and nontheist are solid terms to go by, I'd say, and I'm not an atheist. My point is, if you've ever read Zen or Dao literature, I'm saying I naturally fit into that. I said I only use them for description of how I act; I am not a part of any of their groups, but I can see we've got the same spirit. But really, I'd love to hear more about who you are rather than go on about the semantics of describing one's self.

As for you, YukkurisMustDie, that's a pretty funny description :3. I've never met a NEET so I'd just love to know how one even becomes one.

sorry :(

What attributes of those do you naturally fit into? I'm curious because Zen Buddhism and Daoism are completely opposite in terms of their message and organizational structure and you're the first person that I've heard who claims to have aspects of both.

As for something about myself, as long as we're talking religion, I had somewhat of a religious crisis a number of years ago and took a look at several religions in depth. Right now I am firmly atheist, however, as none of the religions I looked into had enough internal consistency for my liking.

As part of that, I've done studies of both Zen Buddhism and Daoism. (Daoism somewhat less because as someone who believes in the power of rational thought, I disagree with the premise that man can never fully understand certain aspects of the universe)

Haha hey man it's whatever. Well Zidana, I believe man's mind is very limited. Seeing as we have no direct connection with reality and can only do so much with ourselves, I assume there is much that goes on beyond the human mind, and both the Daoists and Zen would agree with that. But I mean, when we're talking about Daoism, we both flow in the same way; naturalness, detachment, simplicity, and their wu wei, which I would sum up as my relaxed version of determinism crossed with apathy from my acceptance of my powerlessness in determinism. As for Zen, they share several of the Daoist ideologies I said, as well as they're quite bent on enjoying themselves and stimulating themselves. Really, though, I want nothing to do with the societies involved in these things; I'm only talking about the hearts of the teachings. Similar to your example earlier, it would be like someone reading the bible and feeling in-tune with the core teachings of it but then never going to church or anything like that.

On a side note, I don't think atheism or any religion'll give you what you want if it's an intellectual pursuit. So what'd you have a religious crisis for, anyway?

HankySpanky, don't tell me you're a NEET, too?

Ah, I see. I still think you're using the labels wrong :p, but I can see how you have beliefs in common with the tenants of both.

Although I think the church analogy is somewhat off, since it's not going to church which defines a Christian, but the acceptance of Christ as savior. Similarly a Daoist isn't defined by going to Daoist Temple ceremonies or having a Daoist wedding, but by embracing Daoist teachings.

As far as my religious crisis, long story... started out areligious, became a Catholic, became disillusioned with the Church and turned into a militant Atheist, as some Catholics do. Had a personal crisis some years later, broke down, and prayed. But I didn't pray to the Catholic God, because I was convinced that He couldn't possibly exist as the Catholic Faith defined Him. I just asked that if there was a power greater than myself, if it could HELP me.

And to my surprise, my prayer was answered, not in that my problem was solved, because none of my circumstances changed. But I felt that a burden had been lifted from me all the same and I was better able to DEAL with what was going on. I also felt connected to some presence, which I was unable to fathom or define.

I'd prayed before as a Catholic, but it was all rote crap. I'd never prayed sincerely before. So that was my religious crisis, a militant Atheist who'd experienced, what? A genuine religious experience? And I had no idea what had happened or what to do with myself. I asked a bunch of friends of different religions and found that they'd experienced similar feelings while praying to their DIFFERENT divinities. So I started researching.

So how did you become interested in Zen Buddhism and Daoism?

errrrrrrrr we're going way off on a tangent here.

NEET

Just part time NEET. I do have a job that pays for the servers though. _-_ Also play world of tanks way too much. I'm pretty good at it and always rage at worthless teammates.

I'm a cynical sarcastic jerk, but I try to be nice about it most of the time. :]

Strictly speaking, I'd be a buddhist but I tend to avoid discussions on religion because its a very polarizing topic.

I'm a part time college student transitioning to full time and probably going to major in something engineer related. But I am also a huge and obsessive fan of touhou in general. I always make a point to clear every game on at least normal mode without using continues so I can unlock and clear all the extra stages. I will refer to anyone who plays touhou on easy mode as subhuman. I absolutely despise secondaries(fans of touhou who do not play the games). I will argue relentlessly on end on favorite touhou discussions and will regularly shitpost on /jp/ and derail any general shmup(shoot em up games) threads on /v/ into touhou nonsense. I make every brony look like tame normal individuals. I am everything wrong with the touhou community. My friends and family just view me as a normal college student with normal college student problems and normal college student hobbies, but beneath that exterior lies a much more sinister persona. I'm more relaxed about yukkuris though, just don't mention you play on easy modo or i swear to god its punichmench chime.

How do you feel about fans of yukkuris who don't care about touhou and don't play the games? :O

Quasimoto, you're a hilarious writer. But...I've never done anything Touhou related, guys. I saw pictures of Yukkuri somewhere, some time ago, and I was just hooked. How did any of us find out about Yukkuri is another solid question, but that should be for another thread.

but if you don't play easy mode you can't dodge bullets good!!

Although I never understood why the touhou fandom grew so big. It's hard to imagine Zun's drawings inspiring much of.... anything.

lol that's funny. when i see his drawings, i think "he can't get someone else to do the art?"

The official Touhou Project games feature ZUN's art.

My run on Embodiment of Scarlet Devil:
Total score - 64079750
difficulty - normal
game completed - 100%
continues used - 0
misses - 12
bombs - 25
spell card captured - 8
slowdown rate 0.08%
EDIT: using Marisa B, clearly. Too good.

A-am I acceptable, even if I used 5 lives instead of the canon 3?
Oh wait, I'm scum anyways: I only like yukkuris, I couldn't care less about Touhou. If we ignore some cool Asatsuki Dou doujins, I never read anything about that, not even porn.

I only like yukkuris

same with me. i have played the touhou games, and although the music is awesome the gameplay is based on dodge a bunch of shit which gets old and repetitive. i'd rather just play a normal shooter like gradius.

of course, imo the whole bullet hell subgenre's gimmick is anime girls (anyone ever play those touhou knockoffs like hittagattahappa?)

I'm going to chime in and say that Daoism and what's actually written in the Dao De Jing/Tao Te Ching by Laozi/Lao Tzu are not exactly in sync. Much of what makes up the organized religion of Daoism are things which the Dao De Jing specifically states are not conducive to staying on 'the Way'. In that regard one might call themself a Daoist in that they strive to live by the teachings of Laozi in the Dao De Jing, and not the needless and distracting fluff that other people have tacked on over the centuries.

Myself though, I'm a multi-pantheon worshiping pagan (the Celtic and Norse gods mainly). I wouldn't really call myself one of those new-agey types though. Mostly I just raise a pint in the name of Thor or Morrigan now and then.

I'm starting to think that Our Spiritual Dosu Liege should change the title of this thread to "Religious Talk by Yukkuri Fans".
