Translation issues

Hey everyone, I wanted to talk about the fact that there's been a lot of Japanese material uploaded recently but very little translating has been done. I'm hoping maybe we can talk about this issue some and try to find a way to keep the translating rolling. Maybe it requires a little joint effort.

It definitely seems like there's a few people here who can read Japanese fluently, but maybe they don't want to translate it into English because their English is not great? I bet a combined effort of Japanese translators and English editors could translate a lot of the works we've been dying to read, such as the new Kiriraitaa and Suiso work.

I'm just hoping that on this thread we can join together to find a way to translate more of the material.

For instance, I can't read Japanese at all but if someone who could read Japanese sent me a rough or in-depth translation I'm sure I could turn it into proper English. That's one idea I had. Other people could join in on this, too.

There's also some tagging work to be done... lots of pictures missing untranslated, some already-finished stuff that still has translation_request or lacks translation_available, some partially-translated or (as you said) poor english that should have partial_translation or check_translation. Would help translations by letting the translators, well, translate.

Just throwing it out there for anyone who doesn't feel up to helping with the actual TL.

I just don't have as much time as I used to, so I can't do much translations unless its a few short sentences. Sorry...

I don't have a lot of time too and my english/japanese isn't that great but I try to post some TL sometimes when I think that the original material is interesting. For those that don't want to TL keep uploading cool stories and creating pools for them :)

To be honest, I think even having whatever text is in the image on 'paper'. You can throw it into google translate or whatever and see if there's enough to get the general idea of things. I find I can read most pixiv comments just using google's translator, though it may not trade as well into manga.

Also, I'm starting to go through the check_translation tag. I'm not sure what the etiquette here is though. Usually, you want to convey the general meaning, but have it come across more naturally in English, rather than a literal translation. Correct? If I mess anything up, I assume my changes can be reverted as well.

As far as I know, check_translation is for when the translator isn't sure they've got the meaning right. There can be several way to translate the same phrase with totally different meanings in English. Worse, sometimes they're both right (puns for example).

Need a new tag for the meaning you described?

Was it ever? Last time I tried it on some Japanese text, it insisted on interpreting it as Vietnamese and 'translated' it into a string of punctuation marks and unprintable characters. ಠ_ಠ

Having the text 'on paper' would still be a big help to people like me though. Whenever I find a Kanji I don't know, I can just copypaste into a dictionary. =P

Well, I've only gotten around to one image so far. All I did was take things that sounded awkward when read and tried to arrange them so it came across more naturally. Maybe for what I'd do, a check_syntax or check_grammar tag would be more appropriate. Or maybe editor_request ?

But I don't want to go 4kids or anything and just totally change the meaning of things, I just want to make sure everything flows well and can be read and everyone take it easy, yeah?

I can't read moonrunes so in the end what help I can do is limited. I suppose I could attempt to learn some common phrases used in yukkuri manga to help piece things together. I already know how to search for abyuse. :p ゆっくり虐待

Perhaps you can try this software: Capture2Text
http://capture2text.sourceforge.net/

It can capture the Japanese characters and copy to clipboard, such that you can then paste it into Google Translate. My Japanese translation is mainly done in this way.

Another method is tedious... By looking up each character one-by-one, copying the characters from the tables:

I haven't tried the capability of the software on identifying kanji, 'coz I can read & type Chinese characters and kanji is basically Chinese characters. One cannot identify the kanji by comparing with tables, so...

You have exactly the opposite problem to me. =| I can read Hiragana and Katakana almost as well as I can the latin alphabet (they're really easy to learn since there's only about 40 of each) but memorizing all those kanji is... taking a while.

While I can't speak to their accuracy overall, your translations were mostly understandable and seemed to be fairly accurate for the parts I could understand. I've rewritten them and posted the results, please let me know if you have any other requests.

If an admin sees this, I could use the ability to add translations/tags.
