Yukkuri Biology/Behavior General

Posted under General

I thought I'd create a thread containing the various theories regarding the biology and behavior of yukkuris, and also to renew discussion regarding the subject, which I find quite interesting myself.

Disussion of shithead implication

About this one topic what is the exact definition of shithead(in yukkuri biology of course) and there are entire species or sub species that are always shithead ? And there is a way to turn a shithead into a nicehead ?

RP said:

I'm not sure if there's a universal definition for a shithead. Generally it's understood to be a yukkuri with a selfish disposition but different people draw the line at different places.

Personally I don't really believe in a 'shithead' label anymore. I just see it in terms of varying shades of self-interest.

Most stories have shithead behavior as fixed, with no possibility of redemption. But then there's stuff like

Would a Kotarisa be able to survive a light rain by hiding under its kotatsu or is the rule about accessories being sugar hard and fast?

From the wiki :
Adult Kotatsu Marisas have an entire kotatsu on their head, fully functional and radiating heat, while koyukkuri kotarisas have doll-sized kotatsu, still functional but diminutive in size and accessories.
For be completely functional the kotatsu can't be Made of sugar because it will be melted by the heat source of the kotatsu (essenzial for make it functional) so the kotatsu is a real kotatsu and then yes probrably kotarisa can survive light rain

One thing to remember, people, is that there really, really is no canon here. There's a lot of stuff that people can agree on, but this really is a fandom of a fanart of a fandom.

That being said, discussions can be interesting.

For example... Reimus are notorious for being mostly lazy and greedy. One wouldn't think that they'd survive long without someone to hunt-hunt for them and protect them from hurt-hurt. You'd think that the Reimu species wouldn't survive long. Yet Reimus are by and large the most populous yukkuri species out there.

Why do you think that is?

However, getting an electric blanket, which essentially is what a kotatsu is, wet, is NOT recommended.

Yes but i want you to considerate two facts.
Fact one the old kotatsu to make heat use a pot and we don't now if kotarisas use the pot or the elettrical device
Fact two even if kotarisas use the elettrical device it will be cover in futon like the marisa so it will not get in contact with the rain

I've seen both.

You can generalize that getting any electronics wet is a bad idea.

Also the kotatsu is not just an electronic blanket. It actually IS a table with a space heater built in, with blankets wrapped around it sort of. You can spill any sort of liquid on the table top without fear of electrocution, it functions as a proper coffee table that you can stick your legs under during winter.

Just remember don't touch the heater with your leg.
Kotarisa's heater wouldn't be electric. It just let out heat constantly because the yukkuri thought that's how it's supposed to be.

One thing I was thinking about is various ecosystems/biomes yukkuris may live in. While Marisa's and Reimu's are say very common in temperate forest, and urban areas. You don't hear much about species living in the tropics, boreal forest, deserts, swamps, mountains, steppes, or the arctic. Perhaps some species are far more common in these areas then what is traditionally considered common.

There was a story about a Dosu leading its clan into the desert and encountering tribes of some other type, i dont remember which, that had adaptations for finding water. It was really good.

I learned that the hard way zeeeeee.... sitting indian style is the safest way to not burn yourself. All those mangas where people stick their feet all the way inside the kotatsu are stupid stupid human beings that will burn themselves when they try to get up.

Anyway...

The world of sand is kinda weirdly formatted on the site because of the copy-paste formatting, so I recommend reading it in the original google groups if you can or download the file.

I have always imagined yukkuris being "adapted" towards certain climates. Beyond nazrins and the desert, I also thought about writing a jungle chapter with Shou types (tigers and jungles!) as the main character but that never came to fruition for some reason. There's some obvious affinity in the yukkuri types:

Murasa, Nitori: water. Sea or lake, doesn't matter.
Flyer types: forest or jungle.
Nazrin: desert
Letty and Cirno: arctic tundra or cold places in general.
etc etc...

I'd imagine a kotatsumarisa would be also suited to cold places.

World of sand was a good read. I'd like to see more stories like that. I generally lean more towards the science/pet shop stories myself.

Truth be told I know very little about touhou and came upon yukkuris by chance. I was looking at the yukkuri types listed on the wiki and then at the characters they were based off of to try and come up with an idea of what biome they may fit into, and using what information the fandom has come up with on yukkuris. My apologies if there's some errors.

Reimu - Forest, mountains, urban
Marisa - Forest, marshes, rivers, mountains, urban
Alice - Forest, mountains, urban
Aya - Forest, jungle, grassland, savanna
Chen - Forest, mountains, urban, possibly deserts
Cirno - Tundra, cold mountains, boreal forest
Eirin - Forest, mountains
Flandre - Forest, jungle, grassland, rural, urban
Iku - Marsh, rivers, lakes, forest
Kanako - Forest, mountains, marsh
Letty - Tundra, cold mountains, boreal forest
Meiling - Forest, jungle, grassland, mountains
Momiji - Forest, tundra, mountains
Murasa - Lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal areas
Nazrin - Forest, desert, grassland, urban
Nitori - Wetlands, rivers, lakes
Orin - Desert, jungles, savanna
Patchouli - Forest, mountains, urban
Ran - Forest, mountains, grassland, urban
Reisen - Forest, grasslands, rural
Remilia - Forest, jungle, grassland, rual, urban
Sanae - Mountains, forest, marsh. rivers
Shinki - Mountains, caves
Shou - Forest, jungle
Suwako - Forest, marsh, rivers, lakes
Tewi - Forest, grassland
Wakasagihime - Lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal areas
Youmu - Forest, urban
Yuyuko - Forest, jungle, grasslands, rural
Yuuka - Forest, jungle, grassland, steppes

Looks passable, if not all spot-on. You also need to consider the rarity of the yukkuri type in question. Like for instance, chen, nitori, sakuya, and eirin types are also quite at home in urban settings in some stories, but their rarity is why it's accepted that they're hard to find there.

Also, a couple of things:

1) For the Touhou Project wiki, if you're really interested on the source material, I direct you over to http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Wiki as the primary reference. Please do not use the one hosted by Wikia.

2) On that note, when you mentioned yukkuri wiki, I hope you didn't mean the one also hosted by Wikia. Both wikis are woefully outdated and full of inaccuracies. The "wiki" OYP does have at http://yukkuri.shii.org/wiki/show?title=help%3Ahome is still an ongoing work in progress, but just ask around here in the forums, in the post comments, or on the OYP google groups page, and someone should be able to answer, or at least your questions can lead into interesting discussions.

I think those biomes are pretty much spot on, similar to what I had always imagined.

You're also missing yuka, which I would pictures as more of a plains/steppes type of yukkuri since they would need lots of sun to cultivate gardens.

To be fair, you don't need to know touhou to enjoy yukkuris... yukkuris are sort of built on puns of fan-made assumptions and jokes on the touhou characters, a lot of which don't make sense anyway.

You should learn a bit more about characters' fandom though, to understand the yukkuris characteristics. For example, Yuka is a bit sadistic in fandom, mokou and kaguya have rivalries, Chen and Ran have unhealthy obsessions with each other, etc.

But the biomes are pretty good. I'd probably add kanako/suwako/sanae to similar biomes since they're a group. I understand kanako being in the mountain biome but I feel like they'd be pretty much at home in forests like all other non-water-arctic type yukkuris.

This would probably take more work than necessary, but I would expand this further by listing one setting as their primary, then listing the other possible areas as secondary habitats for every yukkuri type.

So, as an example, yuka types will have grasslands as primary, then plains and forests as secondary. The kanako types will have mountains as primary, then farmlands and rural areas as secondary.

Of course, that's not to say it is impossible to find any of the given yukkuri types in a setting that's not listed (say, a dosu kanako in the city), but these cases would be atypical ones, and would be possible story hooks ala fish(or rather, yukkuri)-out-of-water scenarios.
