One Yukkuri Place

A Yukkuri raising sim? A fool's errand?

Posted under General

Yeah, 3d will be like that, even if you are using Unreal3 which is very simple, can be very frustrating as well as time consuming, and they already do the hard stuff for you. However regardless of this being 2d or 3d this will take a lot of time, especially since my teammate and I are making a game and not just a mod to a pre-existing game.

Though ultimately I guess that it comes down to how much time my teammate and I are willing and able to devote to it.

I was using XNA studios, it's a C# library typically used for creating xbox live arcade style games. I don't think they had a proper collision detection model for 3d so my yukkuri would be bouncing through random crap, but that's a different story.

Ultimately you have this down right. It's the amount of time you need to spend. Do remember that this will take months to get working unless you're working 8 hours a day on it.

Yeah it sucks when the collision detection isn't working the way you want to, it can lead to some pretty funny/weird glitches, plus gives you a lot of frustration. I am currently unemployed so I have time but I am also looking for a job too so I am unsure how much time I can commit in the future but for now I do have plenty of time to devote to it.

I do not own or know how to use Gary's mod (if that was what you meant by "gmod-mod"). Plus since this is a raising sim I want to give the player the feeling that they are actually influencing the yukkuri more then just petting or kicking it. Plus my teammate and I are still debating whether or not it should be in 2d or 3d.

My teammate and I have almost finished planing things for the game. All that is left is to plan the interface and the actual set up of the game... talk about going backwards...

Well, start with something simple. I'd work up a simple yukkuri with a few options of interaction:

1) Talk to it
2) feed it
3) "actions" (fill in later)
4) save the game

the UI is typically worked on in concurrence with coding so its not necessarily backwards.

Yeah that is a good start. I don't think my teammate is a game major, or really knows how difficult making a game really is. I say this because he keeps recommending things that are difficult code. Although I also tend to suggest ideas that are just as difficult to code as well. Although we will probably need more people to make things go more smoothly once we actually start working on it.

Am I too late? I am very interest in this project. If not I will give it a try. I think I probably can follow your demand in part of programing and I also have a lot of time. But I need something in return as well. I need native english speaker to improve my terrible english. I want to use skype as communicator. You can see my work and my english skill here. http://youtu.be/nYrYRgzyQVc

Same here, except not so much on the skills. I'm in the process of getting a degree in a semi-related area, so by the time the game gets well underway I'll probably be able to at least be familiar enough with concepts to do monkey work and talk about the project technically without having to have things explained to me. I've thought about this a lot, and the ideas laid out by lonefool and expanded in the discussion are right in line with what I had been thinking. I'd love to help if I can, though all I concretely bring to the table is a lot of researching skill and willingness to commit hours to trying to figure out how to solve a problem, regardless of how insignificant it may be.

That being said, if anyone is interested in my thoughts on a yukkuri game in general:

*it seems like for anything yukkuri-related to feel right it would probably have to be 2D anyway or either rather cell-shaded or cartoonish 3D (maybe like some earlier Illusion stuff if anyone is familiar)

*If the roleplay/interactive fiction/multi?? angle were something people were interested in perusing, I have had the thought that the lack of ability to program a satisfyingly sophisticated yukkuri AI could be fixed perhaps by introducing a game mode where abuser and yukkuri(s) are each controlled by a human participant during a set session, though even if possible I assume this could never stand on its own.

*I'll stop here since most of this is really abstract and probably not very useful, with the final thought that it would be really nice if someone investing the time and skill toward making any yukkuri simulation game could lay down a solid engine and make it possible that community content, scenarios, extensions could potentially be annealed to the completed project.

P.S. Just one more thing,

I really, really think it would be a great feature in a yukkuri breeding type game to have a variable for the degree of shitheadedness of a yukkuri which would effect various aspects of its behavior and a basic system for determining the shiheadedness value of offspring of two yukkuri. (my thoughts: a normal distribution probability with μ being the average of the parents' values and the max being 125% the higher parent's value and the min 125% the lower parent's value, allowing in theory for a koyukkuri to be nicer or dumbasserer than either parent by a small margin but making it most likely that they will be right in between. Of course the integer range could be on whatever the desired scale and it would be calculated out in quartiles, percentiles, whatever)

All of this (including possible environmental alterations) could be implemented pretty much however the creator wanted as far as lore goes since there seems to be no real precedent for how this works and bean paste is magic anyway.

We are still accepting help. Currently we are discussing what we are going to do with the game. So far we have decided that we want the dialogue to be a important part of the game. By this I mean that we want to make sure that the yukkuri will not just say the same line all the time, this is not a visual novel.

I am glad that there are still people are checking this topic.

Well I rarely check forum. I could say it is miracle that I find this topic. I am not even check other topic yet.

The other forums that I did aren't as important right now, they are just asking what yukkuri and attributes we should use in the game.

This is the one meant game updates and recruitment.

Just FYI still checking this topic. If you have updates or whatnot it's still good to post it up here.

We don't have much to update so far. We really don't have too many people either.

Other then myself their is Mariodante, who was the first person to join and so far he has been the person who I have been discussing most of the game with. Mariodante said that he knows several people who can help who are friends of his. I however have not talked to these individuals so I don't know how many people he got or what they intend to contribute to the project.

EndEarth has said that he is willing to help, and considering that he can handle the programing , means that he fills a very important role.

sugra has expressed an interest in helping, but I haven't heard more from them, we need more of the help that they could offer.

To be completely honest I fell like I am dead weight. All I have really done is manage the forum and discuss things with Mariodante, normally I end up having things come up and then I will not respond to Mariodante until a week after he sends me a message. I feel like I am being one of those people in a group who doesn't show up for meetings or even do work but still expects to get credit for the work they didn't do.

Anyways putting my feelings of inadequacy aside, Mariodante and I decided that we should probably create a site or google group for the purpose of discussing the game and putting updates when have them. Unfortunately neither Mariodante or I have a clue about how to do that...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, we are still recruiting.

Are you interested in just the raising side, or breeding as well? I've been thinking about making something like this for awhile now, but it really needs to have both a breeding and a raising/teaching aspect for me to be interested.

A new Google Group is easy to make. You just need to head over to https://groups.google.com and click on New Group.

Ultimately we would like to make a raising and breeding game. However what Mariodante and I have decided on is to first make the core game, which would be simpler, and after we got that to work we would make updates to it that would add complexity and more variety. After all, most of us are not professionals, none of us are being paid to make this, and most of us are doing this during our free time, so there is a limit to what we can currently achieve. However we are all willing to do this.

Also relating to the art, I am not the artist, I am a mediocre artist, and I am pretty sure that my style will not be selected for the game. In fact I don't think we have settled on a art style yet... I am sorry YukkuriMustDie.

Oh and that you Mielle for telling me how to make a google group.

here is the group I just made.

What code are you intending to use C++, Java, Other? sorry if I missed this in a previous post all I remember was a leaning towards 2D over 3D.
