On my way home from covering a story, I happened to stop by a food stall for a beer, and I saw a yukkuri Marisa crawl out from a hole in the fence behind the stall. Two little Marisas hopped out after her.
The Marisa that seemed to be the parent was badly injured. Her hat was torn and tattered, and the left half of her face was gouged out. Perhaps because she was no longer able to hop, she dragged her body along the ground.
The three yukkuris lined up behind the food stall, and the owner put a plate of oden in front of them.
The yukkuris thanked the owner, then they began to eat.
I asked the owner what had happened to the Marisa, and apparently a drunken customer had hurt her just for the fun of it.
He had banned that customer from returning, but he still felt a bit guilty that it had been his customer's doing, so now he gave the yukkuris his table scraps and leftover oden.
The stall owner told me that with his advanced age, he was thinking of closing down his business and retiring soon. But when his food stall is gone, I wonder what will happen to those Marisas....
