why aren't these guys making a fuss out of not having their hats on them, I wonder. were yukkuris a decade ago so different from what we know as of now?

Of course they are. The early yukkuri work were not that hell bent in making them the pathetic creatures that are so easy to despise. If I recall those times, it was rare to have yukkuri die in early works and if they do, it is mostly for comedic effect and hardly graphic.
As the yukkuri meme went on and started grating some people's nerves, gore/shock artists start to get interested and produced their work. 2chan being what it is, took the idea and ran with it with the whole anko thing and the usual yukkuri fan art. As the yukkuri fad raged, more and more of the typical world building by nerds occur, better artists got interested and memetic ideas were passed around by each popular artwork depicting yukkuris until we get to the point today. Obviously, since some artists are so much better and more prolific than others, their ideas are what really shaped what yukkuri "canon" is today. Those artists that do not have the same following among surviving fans are left forgotten and unheralded, ankos being largely harder to digest than the pretty pictures of yukkuri manga are delegated to supplemental status.
The internet being the internet, focus on the sensational and exaggerated aspects of yukkuri fallibility persists because those are the ones that are easier to remember and what most remaining fans want (abyuse) to feel good about themselves.
