I had heard a rumor of yukkuris who cleaned the park they lived in. My interest piqued, I decided to cover the story.
Arriving at the park in question, I looked around the square. I could see a number of yukkuris.
At that hour, there was only a crepe stand open for business, but apparently on weekends, the park was bustling and lots of food stalls opened up.
As I approached the crepe stand, a yukkuri Reimu parent and child were eating a crepe that had fallen on the ground.
According to the owner of the crepe stand, when things were busy, customers would drop food or leave wrappers and utensils littering the ground. Somehow, it had come to pass that the yukkuris would clean up the litter, and in return, the vendors would give them scraps and leftover food.
While one might think these were excellent circumstances for a stray yukkuri, the number of yukkuris around seemed surprisingly low. I asked him about that, and this was his reply:
The ones who speak rudely, or demand food, or fight with other yukkuris--we get rid of them. And periodically, we cull the adults.
