It's good to be back after a couple months' vacation of these doughy pests - and to a nicely translated (and newly uploaded!) pool! Whoever uploaded/tl'd this did a very easy job of doing so! Thumbs up.
Please eat action always remind me of that story where reimu offered please eat for her spawns which made her happy but that just made her paste unsweet and unappetizing.
Postmortem birth might be an interesting survival mechanic if the resulting yus weren't such dumbasses. If mothers were able to paste-program at least one, it would raise the chances of it finding another straggler in the spring.
Most of the yukkuri works I've seen lately seem to agree that newborn yukkuri are incapable of surviving without round-the-clock care. Just take a look a few pages back, she can't even chew the leaves in her nice soft bed.
I'm not sure what use any kind of "programming" would be when your gums are too weak to chew solid food... but then again everything else they do is doomed to fail anyway so I'll just go with that.
You know what? We need more of this kind of speculation. Preferably in story form! Get over to YFT and post mister stories or Cirno will do scary puff puff! >_<
I'm not really one for prose. For what I was thinking, instead of just being born with its regular paste instinct of catch phrases and dumb behavior, its mother would give its basic survival behaviors via paste as the cost of its life and other kos. When the ko finally drops or wriggles out, instead of doing a greating, it would have a sort of "if you're reading this then you already know..." flashback memory that its mother left it with instructions to eat what is left of her and to take her share of easiness. Then reimu just slowly eats aware at the remains of her mother and siblings until winter finally passes. Need to take her parent's share of easiness would often result in deibuism.
I honestly don't understand how many people can call a freshly born koyukkuri "dumb", when it's significantly more clever than a human baby of the same age. Of course, their mental development stops waaay earlier (the most intelligent Yukkuri I've seen depicted top at 13-14, and that's mostly the Baron's Iku), but there's an undeniable lead for the first year or so. All of you were dumber than a koyukkuri, once. :D

Well, first one can measure their power of reasoning against their verbal abilities. When a child can express itself as well as a koyukkuri, it's likely to be significantly smarter than one. To me, yukkuri being able to speak as well as they do, and from such a young age, signifies squandered mental faculties, potential that goes unrealized due to their momentous self-obsession. They assume things'll work out for them, as they're too easy to become legit victims (victim complex doesn't count), so they don't try to figure out how to make things work out. Take their lack of curiosity, for example. A human child will be far more curious before it's able to walk or talk, and far more perceptive even if it can't express itself or form a big picture yet. Slightly unrelated, I read a hypothesis about human intelligence and development, which suggested that the reason human babies are born so mentally underdeveloped compared to most animals is that it gives them much more time to develop their intelligence, from scratch, in accordance to the world around them. tl;dr yukkuri are born too smart to act as dumb as they often do.
They didn't split from eat-up, so she thinks they're still alive.
She's a baby. Exactly how is she supposed to be aware of all of this? Even the narrator knows that she won't survive, even if they eat up.
Even if the parents succeeded in doing 'otabe-nasai', ...
... for a baby-yu to endure the long winter by herself only, ...
... for this reimyu who was born alone, the Spring was too far away. However just before being giving birth, both died from starvation and coldness.
