I have read them for months now and my interest in them comes and goes. The humor hinges on the surreal and I sort of like it but I was wondering how the general yukkuri fandom interprets osatouyus in the first place.

I believe Tani's work is the "canon" of osatou yukkuri, hence my reply You can see it in pool #869 too, and a number of illustrations have them with the Tani's shape, rather than the Osatou's one (they are moderately different)

So osatou yus are powerful and incomprehensible cosmic terror versions of yukkuris? Got it.
well anyway, care to explain the background of osatou yukkuri's?
One day Osatou uploaded to his pixiv gallery a picture with two Touhou characters drawn like this It got popular and "osatou yukkuri" were born Then Tani made his "Touhou 4koma" comic (Danbooru has all the pages with translations) and a legacy was born Actually, the osatou yukkuri you see usually depicted are derived from Tani's version, I think this is the only (easy to find) picture depicting an osatou yukkuri in the Osatou style
As for the yukkuri themselves, they are probably the only "orthodox" yukkuri left, as they still live in Gensokyou and have weird powers, instead of being pointless creatures whose destiny is to be killed
