Lord of the Flies
Two old men are surveying a site. It’s a beautiful place. There, a big sakura tree growing out from a big rock. Two more weeks and it should bloom fully. Next to the trunk is a big lump of moss, three metres high and two metres wide.
Blown by the wind, the petals fall down on the ground, mixing with many abandoned yukkuri accessories of various types.
One of the men walk to behind the tree to check on something while making notes, remembering something, and then back to making notes.
He returned to the older man waiting for him.
“It’s not long anymore. She will die soon.”
“From what I see, it doesn’t change that much. Still as calm as ever.” The older man commented.
“Just the outside. The inside is eaten, like what we reported every years, it’s a wonder that she’s still alive.”
“How many years has it been since that happened to the yukkuri living here.” The older man doesn’t like the word “extermination” ever since that day.
“It’s been ten years since the last extermination. It really took a long time.”
“So this is probably the last time I will come to see this sakura. Without any duty, I don’t think I will come here like all these times. Too bad.”
“You should thank the yukkuri for that.”
“Yes. Ten years of perfect sakura. Adding to the balance, it’s a plus. I should thank them.”
Marisa is taking an afternoon nap. Compared to her old clan’s easy place, this is the real easy place.
Their chief Patchouli used to say "to live is a beautiful thing, it's easyness" to the clan who lived in hardship of insufficient food.
But Marisa doesn't take it. Patchouli is just lying to give hope to the clan. Every day they live in despair from lack of foods. So Marisa chooses to get out from the clan and look for new easy place. Patchouli said there’s no other place, but Marisa still go anyway. With her is five of her friends who tag along to search this new easy place.
Alice woke her up and brings her to a place.
It’s a beautiful place. In the middle of thick black compost soil stand rocks covered in moss. Among those rocks, from the large one a sakura tree grows out of the crack on that stone. Next to the tree is a big lump of moss almost three metres tall.
There, Marisa's friends are jumping and chasing, enjoying the falling petals. Around the place is a mysteriously very easy atmosphere can’t be found anywhere else.
The big rock has a hole enough for adult yukkuri to use as home. Same as the other rocks. The entrance is not so big, but the space inside is wide. This is a good place for yukkuri nest because the entrance is easy to seal, but the inside is spacious. Perfect for passing the winter too.
Marisa decided to build a new clan here.
After being chosen as the chief, Marisa declared the place as their easy place.
In their old clan, there's only face filled with despair, but here, Marisa felt happiness when seeing the happy face of the five friends who left the clan together with her.
10 years earlier
There's yukkuri in the hiking course. They're wild yukkuri who lived in this area. A koyukkuri asked for food from human, and when refused, they keep following. A human child playfully beat the koyukkuri, but adult yukkuri gave a body blow and that kid falls down.
Same things happened around the place.
Last year, things are better.
There's report of yukkuri in the mountain and they're shy of human. They're cute, and thanks to that cars start coming with tourists from the city.
There are rules for hiking. Stay in the trail; leave nothing behind and as much as possible keep the nature as it is. Most hikers follow these etiquettes, and even rookies would understand when they're reminded of it.
Problem is with those tourists who think they're kings. They only want to know they're coming for recreation and don't want to be bound by any rules. Other kind is those who came to harvest plants from the mountain and then sell it.
The tourists walk out of the trail as they like, gave food to the yukkuri or gave them their leftover lunch. Those who came to take plants gave food to the yukkuri and asked to be guided to their habitat.
Unlike other animals, this is the troublesome part of yukkuri. Those who are given food thought all humans are the same. They communicate this and soon the whole clan shared the same view.
The yukkuri's culture starts to shifts.
Reimu came, saying she will talk with human and sing, so give her food. Many ends up in hikers accidentally stepped on them, falls down and got injured.
Chen came, saying she will guide human to place of rare flowers if she's given food. Many is located outside the safety of known hiking trails, only accesible to yukkuri, or worse, difficult path that ends up with hiker's injury.
Marisa came, exchanging location of edible mushrooms with food. But yukkuri can eat a lot of mushrooms that are poisonous to humans, although they never know.
Alice takes human's trash for interior coordinating in their house. But of course not all is taken, they only took what they like. The rest is left in the forest, polluting the nature.
From the beginning, this is human's fault. But bad stories spread from words of mouth.
There's already signs telling them not to do it, but nobody read those rules. When there’s a casualty, everyone became serious. "Why don't you make the rules easier to understand !?" they demanded.
Now, everyone wants to be the victim. Tracing back, it's their fault from the beginning for failing to follow the rules, but they don't want to be the one at fault.
Since they're the victim, automatically they demand a culprit to blame and take responsibility.
That falls to the municipality.
There's an idea to perform extermination, but there will be a lot of paperwork to add into their already endless work. Besides, unlike other area where yukkuri attacks farms, the yukkuri here used to live away from human, so there's no law about them. They're treated the same way as wild animals.
Moreover, extermination must be done thoroughly. Human can try to scare the yukkuri, but if they fight back, things will get a lot more troublesome.
"How about talking with their Dosu ?"
The yukkuri's boss. Three metres high with relaxing aura and shooting beam from their mouth. There are clans without Dosu, but there must be one here.
One of the official's workers heard it from his grandfather who was the head of the city's hunting club and a reputable person.
The two officials went to meet with Dosu, lead by the young man's grandfather. After a long walk, they reached the place with stones and sakura tree. In the middle is a Dosu.
The grandfather waited outside, he doesn't want to enter Dosu's territory. This old man talked with Dosu before and he always think angrily of Dosu as a terrifying talking creature. But the true reason is, he doesn't like the feeling of being affected by Dosu's yukkuri aura.
As the two officials came in, they feel themselves relaxed no matter how much they have decided to be tense in this meeting.
Dosu already know their reason from reports of other yukkuri, it's about the yukkuri who approached humans. She already told the clan to avoid human and continue their life as they already have before.
But in the end, Dosu don't have any right to decide. She can only ask and those in the clan are free to choose if they want to follow or not.
"Isn't it the same for Mister Human ?"
The officials just placed signboard and hoping peoples would abide the rules. When humans failed to follow the rules, they look for the yukkuri.
But Dosu also understand, if this goes on, there will be extermination.
Before the humans leave, she asked them. How many humans would not listen to their pledge ? Maybe 50 or 100.
Same with the clan. But Dosu can't just punish that part of her yukkuri.
Two weeks after.
Things are getting better. Although complaints still coming in, the encounter rate of human and yukkuri has fallen down. If this goes on, the mountain could become like what it used to be.
That's when bad news arrived. Someone is found dead with yukkuri. It's the usual plants thief and the usual guide two-tailed yukkuri.
Cause of death, most likely his own carelessness. But for the peoples, "if there's no yukkuri, he won't have to die" is enough for a reason.
The government official is troubled.
Why must that man die ? Why can't he just die alone (without bringing any yukkuri with him) ? Why must everyone want to be the victim and look for someone to be responsible ?
Human is the victim, while in the Government and in extension that official as representative of the yukkuri is the person to take responsibility.
Few days after handling mass media, three men climbed the mountain bringing frozen Remirya.
They waited until night when yukkuri are all asleep in their nest hole. All the holes are well sealed with strong barrier, difficult for adult Remirya to break in. But it also sealed them inside.
The man opened the bags. First to come out is the adult Remirya who waited for her children to awake. Then, mini Remirya, 1cm each, flows out.
Starts out from 10, quickly the Remirya breeds until there's a lot of mini Remirya flying. They're special breed made by Factory for extermination. Many generations die from too much pregnancy, but their numbers keeps growing. The human then set them into a honeycomb case and gave them food until the number reached the needed quantity.
When there's enough mini Remirya, it's meal time. Under command of the adult Remirya, the swarm moves.
Dosu's yukkuri aura wont do much against this predator. Barriers won't stop the less than 1 cm sized mini Remirya from entering.
In one nest, a pair of Marisa and Reimu sleep together peacefully with their softball sized Koreimu and Komarisa, sharing warmth. They don't even hear the echoing voice of mini Remirya's wings in their hole.
These Remirya are breeded. They don't know any words, and only eat like hungry ghosts. Fromall over the clan, the sound of their wings can be heard.
Marisa accidentally caught one inside her mouth and she started screaming.
When she opened her mouth, swarm of Remirya fly in, eating on her tongue. Outside, they start eating her eyes. Marisa is in pain until her death but she can no longer make any sound, can no longer cries.
They keep eating her body from inside and outside.
In three minutes, the whole family is killed, leaving a third of their paste (the terminal level of paste lost is about 2/3 here) and their accessories. 5000 mini Remiryas pass through the barrier and look for their next prey.
Mini Remirya can't keep energy inside their body. They're like small animals. If they can't find food for 10 minutes at most. After there's no food, they will eat each other and finally dies. Their self destruct switch.
Dosu watched all of this happened. She felt sad, but also happy as she watched one yukkuri after another ended.
She could fight back, although it's useless against this swarm. She could also run away and build a new clan. But Dosu did neither.
She just waited as the mini Remirya returned to their parent, the adult Remirya whose sitting on tree branch above Dosu.
Last order, kill Dosu.
Dosu's skin is hard, so the mini Remirya starts from those they can eat. The hairs and enter from the wounds created. The eyelids, then eyes. The lips and gum then straight inside. Dosu stay silent, but finally she screamed to the sky until she falls.
Dosu's wish is only one, making others taking it easy. The last thing she can do is letting the 4000 mini Remirya eating her body taking it easy.
Not only yukkuri, but everything. That includes even human.
But humans misunderstood. There's a reason why Dosu's yukkuri aura affect human. Dosu just can't say it right to the human.
Dosu also choose the easiness of the many instead of a little. That’s why she choose to let the swarm of mini Remirya instead of her own clan.
When sounds from Remirya's wings stopped, the humans approached. There, they can still feel the yukkuri aura. Dosu is still alive, but can't move anymore. Here, she became a living easy place for the mini Remirya.
Inside, they're sleeping just like normal yukkuri after eating, which is not what they're supposed to do. These are specially breeded extermination machine. They're supposed to swarm the whole clan, not moving from one nest to another like what happened tonight. It's made so there's no yukkuri can manage to run away.
These Remirya have founded their easiness again, back into normal yukkuri.
Report is given with photo that the extermination is successful. But until Dosu is confirmed to be dead, regular inspection has to be done. The young man think this is because he mentioned Dosu still hasn't die yet in his report, he's too careful.
For all ten years, Dosu has sustained and controlled the mini Remirya with her yukkuri aura. Of course there's other yukkuri coming to this place, attracted by that yukkuri aura. All of them ended like that night. But then, Dosu released the Remirya. She controlled them to move together from one nest to another, not seeing other target before finishing one. After that, they returned to their nest in Dosu, the Lord of the Flies.
Dosu felt easiness from the easy feeling of the many yukkuri inside her body.
Few years ago, her body stopped feeling pain, and she became even easier.
10 years is a long time. Dosu reached her limit and die. Then, her yukkuri aura shut down forever.
Marisa is awaken in her nest and quickly runs out. That easy feeling is gone. Outside, countless yukkuri accessories are scattered and the air is so cold. Those things they never noticed now came to their senses.
Without the yukkuri aura, the swarm of Remirya came out and ate Marisa. They fly into the nest hole and ate Reimu who's rebuilding the barrier. After that, everyone else inside.
In the end, just like how they're made, they start eating each others. The last survivor flies back inside Dosu and cries. With time, that cry also stopped.
