They were created by osatou as surreal versions of yukkuri, and their popularity took off on their own. The biggest factor is tani_takeshi's take on them, which cast them as odd-looking but generally well-meaning, smart, friendly, and useful to humans (as contrast to the stereotypical arrogant, stupid, and generally useless yukkuri).
