Marisa brought her family to the garden of an eccentric man.
When they're about to eat the tomatoes he planted, he came back home. Unfortunately, the yukkuri didn't hear him after seeing the very easy food, so he crushed KoMarisa and then throw Reimu to the wall.
When Marisa realized her family is dead, she saw Mister Human and quickly apologize.
This human is eccentric because he talks to yukkuri. Most other humans would just kill the yukkuri without any attempt to talk. It's not that he cared about yukkuri, but his job is a writer and these days, the closest place to get inspiration for tragedy are yukkuri, those weak and miserable creature discriminated beyond any of their power to overcome it.
Marisa's clan know the danger of human and has rule about not breaking into human's place. Even after the garbage dump is changed to handle yukkuri and crows, the yukkuri still don't look for trouble with human.
But Marisa saw this man is different. She saw him chasing away intruders (cats and crows) from his garden while other human will crush the intruder (yukkuri). She's sure, even if they're catched, at least they wont die.
The man kind of understand the situation, but he don't accept Marisa's argument. Yukkuri are weaker than cats and crows, so they don't deserve the same treatment. Life is not fair. Even human have peoples who rules and be ruled.
After considering that he had nothing else to get from this Marisa, he want to try that accessory abuse. He took Marisa's hat and when Marisa is jumping, he decided to pull Marisa's tongue and braid too.
He's not used to doing abyuse, so he didn't expect Marisa's tongue and braid to get torn off so easily. So he throw away the disgustingly squirming severed tongue and braid then put the hat back to Marisa and bring her to a park.
This park seems to be the place Marisa came from. She crawled to a corner to talk with another yukkuri, but they body slammed her. Marisa has broken the clan's rule and came back crippled, so nobody will want to take care of a burden like her.
Losing her family and rejected by the clan, Marisa crawled back under the bush and cried.
There, the man thought, maybe he's overdoing it.
Next month, the man's new book became best seller. The character in the story made many peoples cry in sympathy. Of course, he kept the fact a secret that the character is inspired from a yukkuri, or else the country will explode in rage.
