Cleaning up the Anko Related pool?

Posted under General

Thanks to the recent efforts of Explosion, a lot more pictures have been properly tagged anko#### and added to the Anko Related pool.

But I noticed that the Anko Related pool is so overloaded that its more of a dumping ground than a practical pool. The story "things not said" alone nearly fills 4 pages, its a bit silly considering it has its own pool on top of that.

That said, I was thinking if an anko has its own pool, it should only have one picture posted in the "Anko Related" for reference.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Hate mail?

I'm surprised this wasn't done already.

The first page of a long series should be in the Anko Related pool, and the rest is linked to its own pool.

It's very complicated all the anko pool cleaning thing. Take "between studies". It's an anko story (according to the pool) but it's the whole story. However, other stories only have one pic that may or may not make justice to the content.

I suggest that for those anko stories that were posted whole, we only include the first page in the anko pool and the rest of the story gets an independent pool. With summary or specific scene pics we only place them together for easier browsing.

I think that a more structured page would be ideal: a table of (anko number; anko title; link to summary/translation if available; post #; author; is it an illustration or comic).

Something similar to the fanfic list on the google-site.

It's a shame Danbooru's wiki is so crippled. I think we could really use a repository like this for all the comics, not only anko stories. But I'm not sure if it's wise to create yet another wiki.

Thats never very practical. OYP has over 100 anko tags most of which are for one-shots, no title translation, no summary/translation and an untranslated author name pictures.

The fanfic list on the Google site is also predominately written by and for English speakers. Theres a reason why few, fully translated ankos are listed there.

Theres a repository for all comics already. They're called pools. You should check it out. I've made over 20 pools personally.

That said, are there really no other concerns? If there are none, I'm going to start pruning the anko pool. The consensus here seems to be "keep the one-shots and short series and remove all but the first page of longer series"

I see your point about the ankos, we don't really have much information about them.

There are over 600 pools on the site. The only information the pools list conveys is title (which sometimes says something about the comic, sometimes not) and artist (only in the newer pools).

There is no categorized index. No information if the comic is translated already. Very little information on what the comic is about.

The pools list offers almost no help in answering the question: "What should I read?" Not to mention "What should I translate", or even "What other stories did this artist draw" (although the new convention of including the author's allows to find the newer ones).

I also feel that a more categorized index, not necessarily a very complete one, would be a huge help for newcomers: it would be a better starting point than blindly hopping between the tags or digging through the amorphous pile of pools.

All your concerns basically boil down to "the pool list is unwieldy". That has to do with the booru system and you'll need to talk to poweryoga about that.

That said, this has nothing to do with the anko related pool. I'm moving ahead on my plan if no one else has anything to contribute.

If the image is anko_related it should stay in the anko related pool. Removing it is counter productive because there will be orphaned pictures that are anko related but not in the respective pool.

It's like giving a title page to the anko. Sure its easier to search through but it effectively leaves out all the other images that are still related to the anko pool.

That being said, if an anko story has a LOT of images, its worth making a new pool for it, just like we do for series.

If we want to go through anko stories and find out which ones have summaries, we can create a few pools:

Anko (Summary Availale)

Or if we have actual full translations:

Anko (Full translation Available)

Any comments on that process?

@Particleman

Yes, thats a limitation of the booru system. There's no indexing of the data so it's hard to sort through. That'll have to come down to a site of sorts or some other search system. Indexing of data is a nontrivial task, so I'd rather not get into that level of detail for now.

edit:

We can make another pool with what yuyukizen said, 1 image per anko story. The current one is a large dump and should stay that way.

So an "Anko Stories" pool, ordered by anko #, with a 1 image per anko represented? Sounds fine by me. Maybe append the title of the current pool to "Anko Related (unordered dump)" or something like that.

To add to this, I'd like to suggest also creating pools by story series, since there's some pictures of related stories with different anko #s. Probably works best with the one-or-few images per anko story, while ankos with lots and lots of images will have the anko series numbers enumerated in the description. Like what I've done with this series: pool #614.

I'm a little confused, how will pictures be orphaned as long as they're properly tagged anko####?

All anko series/comic series that are sizable (and found) already have their own pools. And given Particleman's (legitimate) complaint about the pool list, I don't think anyone is going to go through each pool, checking the comments on each pictures and then transferring the comment into the pool summary anytime soon.

Sure, so who wants to volunteer for that project?

I've already started editing the current one, can we just make a new one and make that the dump?

re: orphaned images

My thought is that they should belong in some sort of pool that identifies them as an anko-related picture. Sure you can probably just search for "anko*" and "illustration" to get it... but thats the point of having a pool right? Just a big heap of pictures you can look through randomly. They won't be orphaned in the sense that they will be unsearchable, but that they won't belong to a pool when they should be.

As for the Anko (full translation available) is pretty easy to do. Just do a search on google groups and we'll have a list. The summaries will take a bit of sorting through. Any ideas if the translated and summarized pictures have any sort of tags on them like "translation_available"?

We can make a new dump or rename the current one. I'm up for either one.

Yeah but a pool that completely engulfs other pools isn't very random is it? That said, I'm still not seeing the concern especially if we're going to make a "anko related dump" pool (or whatever we call it). If we're making a anko dump pool, it should be fine, shouldn't it?

I know theres the "summary_available" tag but thats a hit-or-miss affair.

Anyway, I'm almost done cleaning up the pool anyway. Once I got rid of the biggest stories, its just a matter of polish.

Edit : Pool cleaning done :p

Updated

When I get some time (sic) I'd like to setup some of these pools. As of right now they're on a long list of to-dos.

I believe comment_story is for the red chansketches and with_story is for those images with the black boxes that have story underneath it. Mainly because the chansketches have a comment associated with them...

For comment_story : *shrug*. Sometimes people use this tag instead of summary_available. Other times they use it because the artist included extra dialogue in the comments.

(This is one long comment_story... post #38344)

For with_story : Eh. This tag is so heavily used it seems like a catch-all for anything with a "story".

(This is with_story? pool #686 Comon guys... use the comic tag...)

I just call it as I see it, actual tag meanings be damned. And yes, I'm trying to pool the stuff myself but theres a LOT of series in the archives and its hard to match them up if they aren't uploaded at the same time or connected by an artist or unique tag.

That said, while you're here, what should we do about artist___kome? So many of his pictures are just comics I'm wondering if we should just dump it all in a pool.

Part of the problem with the Anko series' is that the art is on this website but the story itself is on another. It would be nice if there were a way to combine those. Although, so few Anko series are in english/need an account on a different site/etc this may also cause problems.

Just my 2 cents.

This was the idea of the Yukkuri Fanfics site, though it hasn't been updated for a while.

Yar. Ive been getting more work hours than I should be and there are no active translators doing ankos at the moment. I'm doing the current story (what has it been? 3 months?) slowly but its hard for me to sit down ad have an hour to work on stuff.
