With the new software in place, spambots should be a rarity.
Not really. The current protection is merely Google's captcha, so the validity of a registration is entirely in the decisional process of the machines stored in Google's warehouses.
Despite the best effort of researchers around the world, it's very easy to fool these machines, since the decisions are taken by analyzing the entire history of a user since its inception in the web: maybe the spammer is a real human being, maybe the profile was used by a human before being given to a machine, etc.
Additionally, sometimes all it takes is an "unscheduled" browser update to completely annihilate the current beliefs of a machine, which is why sometimes even real humans are considered bad actors.
Tl;dr: Google captcha sucks big time.
