One Yukkuri Place

Hard translation font

Posted under General

Topic to reach a consensus about the fonts to use for translation.

We need roughly 5 fonts for the following :
-Yukkuri speech.
-Human speech.
-Narration.
-Noises.
-Screams.

To begin with, I'm suggesting the following fonts :
Narration, Yukkuri and human speech : Manga temple.
Noises : Felt pen.
Screams : Double feature.

In order to avoid trouble, please suggest free, easy to find fonts. Keep in mind that the more fonts we agree to use, the longer it'll be to translate a picture.

Your opinion, folks?

We had a good hard translator that used some good fonts for the old Kiri stories, but he has taken it easy forever.

No offense, sir, but I won't be using whatever 'consensus' comes out of this. While I don't have a preference for fonts, this kind of thing strikes me as overly extreme internet nazism.

I may choose to use fonts that others have a preference for, simply because I myself don't care one way or another, but in the end, it is my choice. And I will not advocate the taking of my choice or anyone else's by having some kind of 'commonly accepted list of fonts to use'

Who are you or anyone else to attempt to impose this kind of standard on hard translations?

No, offense meant and noted.
You didn't read what I wrote, understood whatever you wanted to read, and insulted me by comparing me to an "extreme internet nazi". Not only you got a Godwin point, but you also completely misunderstood the oh-very-simple word "CONSENSUS" that was written in the FIRST line of the FIRST post of this thread.
I won't insult you by repeating the dictionary and explaining that a consensus is a "general or widespread agreement" and therefore CANNOT be forced by me on the whole website.

That being said, you proved your desires to not only ignore honest criticism and general consensus (oh the pleonasm), but also to do what you do because "you don't care".
So yeah, you can get out.

I dont think we can reach a consensus when I dont see a group of hard translators. Its just Zid, who has been doing this for a while, if she wants to do so, its up to her. Also, dont tell people to get out when you have been here for just 1 month.

FRien2

Oh, please. You've been here for all of 2 months and you already want to establish a 'consensus' which no one has ever thought the website or community needed previously.

What is this but an attempt to bend the culture of the site to your will? The only reason you're taking offense is because I'm not falling for your supposed 'consensus.' What's particularly telling is your comment of 'so yeah, you can get out.' Get out of where? This thread? This forum? Once again, who are you to dictate who can speak where? Godwin I may have used, but it's pretty accurate to describe your attitude, wouldn't you agree?

And what you've been saying hasn't be 'honest criticism.' If you'd come and said 'I don't like the fonts you use, here's why, and here's some fonts I think are better for XYZ reason', that would be honest criticism. You simply come and say 'I don't like this font.' without saying why. So I ask you for a suggestion, and you don't even give me one. How is that 'honest criticism?'

Please chake ich eajy ebewyone...

No need for internet drama...

Having a community standard for all translators (all two of you, I guess...) would be nice and it's not like if anyone doesn't like it we can stop them from ignoring it.

Oh, another thing, FRien2. If you haven't noticed, of your two hard translations that you made after my templates, I've already gone back and flagged MY OWN POSTS for deletion, citing yours as better versions.

See, I really DON'T care. Not about my own stuff enough to have an ego over it anyway. I can't say I LIKE you particularly much right now, but if yours are superior, I'm willing to go with it.

You wanna do hard translations? You feel like you have standards I lack? Do it then. Do your own hard translations. Contribute to the community. I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll keep doing hard translations, using fonts I choose. And if you make a better version I'll happily flag my own posts for deletion. But I'm not going to conform to your standards. And there's no need to attempt to dress it up behind some kind of 'group consensus.' Just say what you want, and then do it. That's respectable.

I'd have to check my skimpy font library for ideas but I think anything for yukkuri speech should have rough/handwritten look. I don't see much of a need for a separate font for screams and noises, you can just make use of bolding or italicizing a fond you're already using and using emphasis lines or something.

Same with human speech and narration; speech bubbles (or absence of them) is a pretty good context clue for what the text is for.

Also if you haven't visited the google fanfic group, the Editing Howto topic mentions "Segoe Print Bold" for yukkuris and "Sans Bold" for anons. Not sure how accessible those are, I'd ahve to get off my ass and research.

Not sure if trolling poorly or genuinely freaking out because somebody asked "Hey what fonts do you guys think are good for yukkuri pictures and it'd be neat if we had some consistency."

I mean, "nazism?" Really?

EDIT; I think I know now.

starshine

Oh, you again. Are you still upset I got that 9/11 edit you did deleted?

That was over a year ago, dude. Get over it.

Zidana, stop posting here.
You already admitted you won't care for what that thread will decide. So except shitposting and trying to do some damage control, you're NOT doing anything constructive.

Here comes Himmler again to tell people where they can and can't post. Once again, sir. Who are you to tell anyone they can't post?

>shitposting

Oh, 4chan. You're one of those anons that can't remember the rest of the internet has a vastly different culture from 4chan. That explains that.

And as far as constructive. I may as well put the question to you. What are you doing that's so constructive? How about you put your image editor where your mouth is, sir? You do good work, why don't you go out and start hard translating some pictures of your own, with the font styles you like, rather than trying to foist your own values on other editors?

Just did some messing around with Word and a bolded Segoe Print doesn't look to bad for yukkuri stuff I guess. Any sans-serif font should work for anons/text in general.

Though "Please Write Me a Song" from dafont looks nice for general body text, probably best for FF/non violent picturesunless you're going for some sort of tone dissonance.

And disregarding what I said earlier about sound effects, Badaboom BB is totally The Sound Effect Font. Though I also like Cocksure...

Fonts are fun.

No I haven't!

Well, this escalated quickly.

On topic, though, for speech, I generally like Anime Ace and Digital Strip. Handy Candy or Hot Mustard is good for sound effects with Maneater BB for more violent sound effects. For non-"spoken" narration I generally just use arial or some generic font.

However, I'm not sure it's necessary to come to a "consensus" on what fonts need to be used since we only have a few hard translators, afaik. As long as it's readable, that's what's important, right?

This is pretty much my point.

I don't mean this in an egotistical way, and I'm not saying this to build myself up in any way. Frankly, a monkey could do what I do. I have basically no artistic vision, I put very little effort in matching the font to the style of the original work, and what cleaning I do is usually perfunctory and I don't regenerate missing areas very well. Once in a while I put in a flared border or something, but it's not very often. Pretty much everyone else on the site that's ever done hard translating has turned out better edited products than me, and I acknowledge it. And I honestly wish more people would do hard translations, because I believe hard translations are the best way to expose more westerners to the yukkuri fandom.

But here's the situation. Punch 'translated' into the search box. Within the last 9 months, there have been TWO hard translators on the site. DeathIsEasy and myself. I'm not including Frien2 in this count because he's just been editing using my templates (seems to be instances where I used fonts that REALLY bothered him or something and he couldn't sleep at night for thinking of my horrible fonts). I hardly think Death needs the result of any kind of 'consensus' reached here. His work is beautiful and goes great with Kiriraitaa's artwork. So when Frien2 talks about a 'consensus' of hard translation fonts, who exactly is he reaching consensus here with?

Just to voice a personal opinion... suggesting fonts is fine, but don't try to force it on to other people. Every fan translation sites have these type of arguments and we don't really need a rule on what fonts to use given the volume that we actually do translate.
