and the mother ate it out of her own hunger instead of doing "please eat up" to give some chance of survival to the little one, and then regreted it.
Dunno how the statement of Dexter hints any lack of "not reading" the first page, while labelling her as shithead is debatable, one can wonder how noble if not scum was this Reimu, since we know that noble yukkuris would sacrifice themselves for their little ones.
For the looks of it, it seems it was an experiment to witness "please eat up" but failed because of the mother choosing her own life over her lil one's.

But it seems like the type of Reimu I got didn't have the ability to "self-split" and let others "eat up"
You're calling Reimu a shithead because she didn't have the ability to do in the first place.
Do YOU have the ability to perform open heart surgery? No? Then you're a shithead and deserve to die.

I think "ability" refers to the moral capacity of the Reimu. It was willing to feed its kid to make it happy, but when the going got tough, Reimu choose to eat her ko and survive herself. She didn't have the ability to make the selfless choice.
JusticeItEasy said: It's not calling a Yukkuri shithead because it couldn't save the little one out of being powerless, but being labelled one because there was a choice to save it, please eat up, but she decided instead to eat the little one, but the option to sacrifice herself for her little one was there, the narrator mentioned it.

As I have stated, I would argue that "ability" refers to likelihood of them doing it. It's like how you would say that a sociopath has no ability to care about other people. It's not like their body could not technically care with a different mindset, but the sociopath lacks the empathy to care and is thus unable to.
Following that line of logic this Reimu lacks the ability to let others eat up easy because the idea of putting others ahead of itself does not even occur to it in the face of death. Not even its own child.
The mother was very clearly letting its child suckle paste out of it in the beginning and could have continued to do so until it died and thus sacrifice itself. So whether it had the actual physical capability to split in half or not it still could have chosen to let it's child live over killing and eating it. It clearly did not, therefore it is a shithead.
Also I'd recommend you to be less malicious when trying to make a point. It really hurts the validity of your arguement if you have to resort to being a snide ass.
Geez, so you guys are blaming a yukkuri which was <intentionally> starved (to death) for eating up another? And not even give a damn to the anon who causes this to happen?
It's the anon who can't take it easy, and not letting yukkuris take it easy; and you're blaming the yukkuri is not easy at all? Well, I feel uneasy on that.

Way to miss how Anon was barely anything but a plot device, without him the story would had been the same, only having the yu's Somehow "getting inside" the box, just check "Stranded by avr-18g" for a similar scenario which actually show why people don't approve of this Reimu.
In this story both Mother Reimu and Anon are uneasy, but Anon is just a plot device, not even a real character per see, barely a narrator that justifies the scenario through off screen explanation. On the other hand mother reimu is a proper character so people will judge according to the attitude, actions and the consequences of such.
