In the wild, they usually make use of small branches and thorns, but some urban-dweeling ones have learnt to use artificial ones like barbed wires and spiked fences for it. Larger shrikes are known to hunt things up to the size of mice and frog and use the impalement to help kill them. There is at least one case of one killing a redbird of similar size.
