Well, lets review what everyone has known about yukkuri reproduction.
Plant/stalk reproduction: the cute and children friendly version. + Allows many babies to be made. Parents can see their babies (very easy). The babies can be monitored and at worst case, easily aborted when situation got bad. - The mother have to supply paste constantly. The baby could fall from the stalk if the mother move too much.
Animal/Mammalian birth: what happened when hentai wants to see yukkuri fucks + Smaller size of litter (less burden after birth). Babies are protected in their mother's body. - Still have to supply them with paste. There's still risk of the baby getting crushed when the mother move too much. Seems to be a lot more physically taxing than stalk birth.
Egg birth, introduced in the House Yukkuri species. + No need to constantly supply paste. Can have very large litter size. Mother can work while leaving her children, thus reducing risk of Deibu-ism. - While not problem for house yukkuri who live indoor with constantly comfortable temperature, this is not suitable for yukkuri living outdoor because the babies might die when the temperature change drastically.
The type explained here, using egg covered in paste try to adapt the egg birth for outdoor. The yukkuri give birth to a lot of eggs along with a portion of their own paste. This paste will insulate the eggs to keep it warm and also supply nutrition.
The negative part is that unlike egg birth or more traditional type, the eggs can't be evacuated. It's placed there and the yukkuri will try to protect it. If the mother can find a protected spot, then all's fine. But they don't always found the safe place and thus many just lay their eggs anywhere they can, exposing it to danger.
The licking part after birth is to cover the eggs with their saliva. In that phase, yukkuri's saliva has effect to protect the paste from microbes and smaller insects.
...I think I've seen older story about similar method. During winter, yukkuri dig a toilet hole and give birth to their eggs, then cover it in their shit. The shit will decompose and keep the eggs warm until spring. Because the babies are not dependent on nutrition from their parents, these babies would survive even if their parents died.
The other version with aquatic yukkuri Marisa is cute too.

That sounds a lot like turtle reproduction when they bury their eggs on the beach, except the turtles don't shit on their young.
Though, from your description, it sounds like chicken reproduction, except that the yukkuri produce their own nest instead of gathering one.
Getting nutrition from the paste would imply that the eggs already have a symbiotic relationship with the outside world, which would imply that questionable things could happen if the eggs happen to be exposed to some strange chemicals.

Just point out, in early yukkuri stories and artwork you can find archived in OYP all yukkuri had the option to lay eggs, it just fell out of popularity as there are less potential with them, and only recently have they been reused as the option for house yu.

It serve the same thermal regulation function. Turtles lay eggs in tropical zone so it should be warm. There has been some pictures about yukkuri using decomposition to warm their nest too.
The shithole method should be a lot more successful. This egg mass version seems like the author just want to step on the eggs. In the shithole version, the nest is made during winter so not much risk of getting flooded. The hole is also made in the nest (can't go out just to shit), so it's more likely to be protected. The hole is also filled with shit, so less likely to be found.

Yeah, sort of like external yolk sack. Is there any animals that produce that kind of eggs? But hard shell is less likely in that case because it needs to be able to transfer materials through the shell.

Certain fish produce offspring with an external yolk sack like salmon. The sack is part of the fish, not the egg. Past fertilization, I can't think of any situation in nature where the eggs have any exchange with the outside world other than heating or hatching. The shell's main purpose is to provide protection; allowing an external exchange would jeopardize that.
