Summer is in full swing and everybody is exhausted because of the scorching heat, even our pet yukkuri, Cirno, is really nervous, muttering "If its too hot I might melt" and then she clings on the floor almost like she was about to (melt), and even if she recovers after a few minutes on the fridge or an ice box, Summer is quite the tough time in Japan, so why don't we cool off? Sitting on the porch outside, with the wind chimes making a pleasant sound, handfan on my grip, a bucket of cold water at my feet, ice box at the side and the echoing sound of cicadas, it really felt like summer, so, lets eat watermelon! For both my and Cirno's sake I cut it down into small pieces and then we eat the juicy and sticky watermelon in silence, "Onii~Onii What's this black thing?", I turned to hear Cirno's cheeky call, one that weirdly missed the "-San" or "-Chan" prefix yukkuri usually say. On her tongue were watermelon seeds, "Those are seeds, the kind that Yuuka-chan grows." And there I saw at the other side of the fence there was our neighbor Yukkuri Yuuka, nodding as in agreement. "So does that mean they are tasty?" Even if I tried to convince her not to, she swallowed them, "Doesn't taste that well..." "Well, even if you eat them it doesn't taste like anything, seeds aren't meant to be edible after all." And that just reminded me of that one time Yuuka was crying out because all her sunflower seeds were gone, was it Cirno's fault? I'll have to apologize to her later. "I heard that if you ate watermelon seeds, they will grow inside of you." And in just a single phrase, Cirno froze up in a cold sweat since she just ate a couple of them, seeing Cirno with tears on her eyes trying to sneeze them out, it made me feel little guilty, "But you are gonna be fine, it won't sprout from cold soil", and as I saw Cirno's face calm down, I noticed a Reimu passing by the street. Its unusual to see a yukkuri bouncing on the hot asphalt and with this hot weather, but something of her appearance was even more unusual, she had a stalk coming out of her head, and from the end of it there was a small green and black striped ball. That Reimu grew a watermelon, Reimu was bouncing leisurely under the scorching sun, I wonder if she's getting hydrated from the watermelon on her head. Cirno was just confused as me when we saw going down the path, time passed with the sound of the wind chimes, the ice box became emptier, the water at my feet was now lukewarm, so it was Summer. I looked a little into it and it turns out that stray yukkuri really are, growing watermelon themselves to survive against the heat, with the fact that watermelons contain lots of water, and with the myth that watermelon seeds grow in your stomach, yukkuri's power of belief made this into a reality, but even if did happen to Cirno, her small body wouldn't have been able to support a stalk. The hot days continued, we stayed inside today and as I was watching TV I stopped at a certain news segment; "Watermelon scattered all over the city" talking about how in a nearby city they had found watermelon remains all over, along with some yukkuri bodies, according to insiders, these yukkuri were using that method we saw earlier with Reimu, but even with the heat taken care of, they died due to a variety of reasons. Even after this I don't think Cirno knows how to spit seeds out of her mouth, so I offered to teach her, but before we began I looked outside the window, the deep blue sky, the sound of cicadas, the sound of the wind chimes; this hot Summer isn't done yet.
