So if I read this correctly, there are two weeks of constrained growth and about two weeks of sun drying. That makes for about a month of suffering. How does one get them to last that long without catching anti-yukkuritis?

Whatever they fed them in the first two weeks are probably high in sugar. Then the second two weeks you probably won't care if they die.
