anko3630: Yukkuri Observation Diary
As summer homework, a young boy keeps an observation diary of yukkuris.
At first he tries to observe strays in the park, but he can't tell them apart, and when he marks a yukkuri by ripping her accessory or putting a homemade badge on her while she's asleep, he can never find that yukkuri again (he thinks that perhaps the first yukkuri's accessory healed itself, and the other yukkuri didn't like the badge and took it off).
Since it's for a school project, his parents give him permission to keep a yukkuri in the house, so he tries bringing a Patchouli home, but she says his house smells bad (especially near his parents' working area), throws up her bean paste, and dies.
Finally, his father brings a Remilia home from work for him. Concerned after the Patchouli incident, the boy asks her if the house smells okay, and she says it smells good. (All the boy can smell around his house is sweetness.) The boy is impressed at the craftsmanship that goes into the yukkuri-like sweets that are Remilia's food--they look like they're alive!
The boy takes Remilia to the park, but the first time, all the yukkuris vanish, and the second time, a man wearing the same uniform as the boy's father says that they conducted a "total extermination," which the boy doesn't really understand. Remilia seems disappointed at not being able to play with the yukkuris in the park.
On a rainy day, the boy watches Remilia play with an extremely realistic toy yukkuri. Remilia ends up eating the toy, but the boy's mother (who gave the toy to Remilia) isn't mad--she says it's okay to eat.
On a walk one day, a yukkuri Sakuya approaches and says she wants to be with Remilia. The boy brings Sakuya home, and instead of his parents scolding him for bringing another pet home, they praise him and let him keep her. Sakuya is very good at taking care of Remilia. Another day, a yukkuri Meiling appears near the door, and the boy gets a third pet.
The family goes on a trip, leaving the yukkuris at home. When they come back, the window is open, but the yukkuris are fine. Apparently a home-invading yukkuri came in, spread bean paste around, and then left.
The boy goes to a summer festival. He tries a yukkuri-fishing game and gets one yukkuri as a consolation prize. However, Remilia eats it.
On a walk, the boy finds another Patchouli and an unknown yukkuri that Sakuya calls Koa. They get along well with Remilia, so he brings them home. The boy's mother scolds him, but she lets him keep them when he shows her the Koakuma. The yukkuris are happy together, and this Patchouli doesn't vomit and is even smarter than Sakuya, so the boy calls her a Super-Patchouli. Patchouli and Sakuya help the boy with his homework.
After a fun summer vacation, the boy goes back to school with his yukkuri observation diary and all his other homework done. He looks forward to playing with his yukkuris at home.
