Patchys love the textbook on the mathematics regarding spatial properties that are preserved under continuous deformations of objects, and dislike the terribly written garbage that is Stephanie Meyers' sparkly vampire series?
Okay, so I had to Wiki topology.
That aside, I too would rather read a math textbook than any part of Twilight.
Forcing yukkuri to read Twilight? Isn't that going too far? Even they don't deserve that torture. Then again, sending them to see the movies will be worse.
Close enough, though for full marks I'd expect reference to post #26711
Oh and "mathematics regarding spatial properties that are preserved under continuous deformations of objects" can be reduced to "study of continuous functions and their spaces".
I had to join my mom in seeing the midnight premiere of one of the movies.
Sneaking in an mp3 player so I could listen to metal on the sly was a wise idea. Even vampires made of marzipan seem tolerable with a sufficiently epochful OST.
What's basically happening is you projecting your own likeness onto the yukkuris. Patchouli was into magic, not science or mathematics; she became more powerful when her health improved and she was able to recite spells better.
Not to mention she's been in that library for so long with no access to romantic literature. She might actually find a romance novel to be a welcoming and titillating reprieve from the usual magic texts.
So I will have to go against the grain and conjecture that the little Paches would actually find Twilight more interesting.
Ah, but you neglect to consider a crucially important variable: Quality of writing. Stephanie Meyer's writing skill is virtually nonexistant, and it wouldn't take long for Patchouli to realize that and shuffle the book(s) off to an especially dusty corner of the library, where she would never have to see it again.
"What's basically happening is you projecting your own likeness onto the yukkuris. Patchouli was into magic, not science or mathematics; she became more powerful when her health improved and she was able to recite spells better."
Reading too much into it. I'm suggesting that the Patchoulis are drawn towards sources of knowledge. Hence a poorly written bastardization of vampires turns them off, whereas the gold-standard text for one of the more important fields of pure math draws them in.
On a side note, I would further suggest that one could undergo a rigorous study of the structure of magic (in a world where magic works, like Gensokyo), which is just what math is (rigorous study of structure).
"Ah, but you neglect to consider a crucially important variable: Quality of writing. "
But you neglect to consider that if people cared about the quality of writing Twilight wouldn't be incredibly popular. Remember that even smart women can be fans of Twilight.
"I'm suggesting that the Patchoulis are drawn towards sources of knowledge."
Perhaps, but Twilight is like pornography for women. She may eventually read the math book but the vampire book has the advantage of satisfying the female's psychological need of being wanted and cared for, which Patchouli has never experienced.
I think you're greatly underestimating the female sex o_O.
Also, this "need of being wanted and cared for" seems to clash with Patchouli's personality as depicted in the actual games. She seems genuinely uninterested in other people altogether.

... This sounds suspiciously like an example of evolutionary psychology at its worst. "You see, women have a need to conform to 19th-to-mid-20th century gender roles. It's natural for them because of these wildly hypothetical constructs we've come up with to 'prove' that it is, and women not being docile, submissive sex toys is unnatural and wrong!"
You know, it's truly a sad thing when a person's ideology can blind them to the truth right under their noses. Either that, or they have isolated them inside of a bubble until they are convinced their views are infallible.
Listen, deary, all of the words, concepts, and ideas floating around inside your head have been prepared for you and put on a nice platter so you can pick them up, use them, and pretend you're a worthwhile individual. Without them you're nothing. And with them you're even less.
By using words and ideas already provided for you, words like "conform" "natural" and "gender roles" you are already speaking in their language, thinking, and behaving the way they want you to, and the funniest thing is that you think you're free and liberated and intelligent. Your mind is already caged and anything you say is nothing but noise cobbled together from the remnants of something that was once meaningful.
But don't worry- they'll put you down once you've served your purpose. Or rather, you'll put yourself down. Now go on and continue pretending you're human.
Huh, it's been a while. First it was YUKKURIS ARE PEOPLE, now it's UNRELATED FEMINISM. Please stop provoking people. One shitstorm dies down, another begins brewing immediately...
I would like to clarify something, as someone else stated something that indicates to me that I was most likely misunderstood. I did not mean to suggest that SUN feels that women should be docile, submissive sex slaves. I meant that his post was reminiscent of such arguments, in that it made a seemingly-sexist point (that women all have a need to be cared for that makes every last one of the unable to resist the lure of Twilight) using a similar basis of questionable psychology. ... I really need to learn how to communicate better.
And, to finish off, I would like to say that although it wasn't my intention, I was far too inflammatory during a moment of emotional weakness, and this is entirely my fault. Although this may be too much to ask, I hope we can put this behind us and continue on in this strange and wonderful community.
