Yukkuris are basically like rats or cockroaches, only reason there are so many is because of high, nearly insane, birth rates, since their mortality rate is way too high for them to keep up with a standar level of birth rate.
of course unlike rats or cockroaches, yukkuris don't develop inmunities against "Killer chemicals" like the cockroaches or adapt better to their enviroment like the rats.
Well, that remains to be seen. We've already seen fic where yukkuries are adapting to better survive in urban areas, socially if nothing else, and this series even has a dosu scaling down to better fit.
yeah but it seems the idea didn't stick to the fanon in general, considering this works are old and never again there was a Dosu living in urban areas with exception of Dosu in the city, at least from all the stuff i had read. If someone had seen another story with a Dosu and their clan living in a city or something feel free of showing it to me, i would be interested on checking it.
And one thing is "adapt" another is "adapt better", animals can adapt in general, but adapt better to the point of nearly being like if the city were their natural enviroment is another story, and that's what usually makes rats standout, they reached the level that it's like the City was as their enviroment as it is in part for humans. Yukkuris in general only have a basic adaptability, in general it seems like the city enviroment can be highly negative for them, between the heat in summer and low tree count to counter it, the cold in winter and the lack of city easy places that can properly hold up agains winter, at least without being some abandoned warehourse or someone's home, plus all the agressive fauna living in the city as well, like the birds, dogs, rats, etc. makes it hard if not nearly impossible for yukkuris to fully adapt, and that without counting traffic, construction and other hazards that they tend to ignore in general.
Though, i'll have to be honest here, even in the wild it seems that yukkuris adaptability is basic at best, they are creatures that barely can live by themselves, at least until they become some skillful nicehead tier type but those are rare.
I sometimes think if, whoever created them "in story", made them as some sort of artificial pet but then some escaped and became wild. Since in general yukkuris feel like they really depend on the mercy of others to exist, barely being able to trust their own survival capcities, even if they are too delusional to admit this.
The fact these things have the same vulnerabilities as the aliens from Signs (that is, living on a planet covered by a substance that's more or less and acid equivalent) shows they have to have SOMETHING going for them, i mean, they need to reach adulthood somehow in order to reproduce.
Well as i said insane highrate reproduction is probably the key for somehow some of them reaching adulthood.
Not all the famillies are wiped out and not all the families have all their members surviving, some sometimes only have 2 koyukkuris surviving and maybe 1 parent or thankfully both, and we still have to see if yukkuris do "marry again" if they had lost a partner already, at least after the little ones became young adult yukkuris nad leave the nest.
yeah i don't doubt they do that, but it's so rare to see a story or comic that actually features that =/
But being honest, it wouldn't be farfetche'd to expect them to do that.
Either way, remarying would probably add even more yukkuris for the next generation. So "single parent attitude" would be a counter productive tactic that go against the only reason why yukkuris don't go extinct naturally.
>>So "single parent attitude" would be a counter productive tactic that go against the only reason why yukkuris don't go extinct naturally.
But apparently in a fair number of stories, this sort of attitude is actually what prevents certain types of yukkuris(deibus) from being extinct.
Like say take for example this story: post #2688 post #2689 We see that the "single parent attitude" here is a very productive tactic and have benefits such as: -You get treated well and fed during pregnancy. -Your offspring gets a free meal after birth.
I feel a bit mischievously evil for laying out a rage inducing example and conclusion. (◔ ◡ ◔)
That's because it works better for minorities, like shitheads. If the majority of yukkuris acted like that, well, i doubt they would be able to keep up their numbers, between trying to be make others pamper them and those others demmanding the same pampering. Not caring about trying to find another proper partner and make more little ones, etc.
Probably the best example of this idea would be like this, remember the Deibu that adopted the Kodeibus of Selfish Mother? well imagine if the majority of yukkuris were like that, arguing with each other about being "pitiful mothers so now serve me like a shitty slave!"
That would be HIGHLY counterproductive for the survival of yukkuris as species.
@harouki Because I'm being eeevil! ..sorry about that.... (´Д`); Also I find Z-Aki deibus great for rage, gotta let anger flow out sometimes it feels great, and such stories are ideal for cursing targets.
@JusticeItEasy Then now the main factor here is of whether shitheads are minorities or not, if the theory that "All yukkuri are selfish jerks because all the nice ones have been killed" stands then they should be the majority and most likely the yukkuri species would collapse under it's own bloated deibuness. But if the theory that they have insane breeding like rats and cockroaches is valid, there would be enough nice yukkuri to fall victim to the not nice ones to support that attitude. I prefer to take the middleground and assume both theories to be correct at the same time, which could be possible too.
YukkuriYukkari you kinda forgot the fact that there are the Scum yukkuris, which are lesser bad yukkuris than Shitheads but still bad yukkuris and the real main bulk of the species.
Basically there is a spectrum like this, from worse to better:
Shitheads -> Scum -> Neutral -> Niceheads
Scum and Neutral are the main bulk of the yukkuri species, and since Neutrals are easy to influence many times the neutrals turn out scum until something trully changes them, at least if they survive the ordeal of being scummish, Scum are the main bulk really bad but not shithead level of rabid badness, but still a bunch of abusive, self gratifying and deluded pricks that would make the world a favor by dissappearing with the shitheads.
Shitheads abuse all the other kinds of yukkuris, Scums, Neutrals or Niceheads, and sometimes ally themselves with the scum yukkuris or manipulate the neutral ones.
So their breeding like cockroaches won't assure good ones prevailing unless they play smarter and maybe get the humans help, since numbers are against them, and considering that the scums also have agressiveness to enchance them, there is no way for them to win unless they start outclassing them in intelligence or be aided by humans.
Whoa there's a spectrum? Hehe, guess I was too simplifying everything in a black/white Shikieiki mode. The spectrum still makes it possible for both theories to be correct though.
~Yukkuris Around Town~
7. The Yukkuri Collection BoxOn my way to work, I spotted a yukkuri parent and children by the side of the road.
Most likely run over by a car, the parent Marisa's left eye was bulging out, and the back of her body was crushed and leaking bean paste.
The young Marisa and Reimu were snuggling up to their parent and crying.
The parent Marisa seemed to be consoling her crying children, but with the damage she had suffered, she probably didn't have long to live.
Back when Yukkuris were still rare, you could call the Sanitation Department to come pick up dead yukkuris.
However, as the number of yukkuris increased, the Sanitation Department could no longer handle the job.
That's why "Yukkuri Collection Boxes" have been placed in every part of town.
With the shovel and fire tongs hanging from the box, I picked up the now-motionless Marisa and deposited it in the collection box.
The little Marisa flung her body against the box, and the little Reimu looked at me beseechingly, but I couldn't be late for work, so I quickly left.
