anko3520: Rope of Life
Summary by platina:
To punish yukkuris for stealing his vegetables, a farmer catches them, ties them up, and hangs them from ropes draped over tree branches about 5 meters off the ground. When he has 30 hanging yukkuris, he holds all the ropes in his hand and says he's going to drop them one by one, but he'll let the last remaining yukkuri go free. In addition, if any survive the fall, he'll let them go. Some boast that they're strong enough to survive the fall, but all of them die. When only one Reimu remains, the farmer still has two ropes in his hand--one of them actually has a rock hanging from it. He lets go of one rope, and Reimu falls--nobody survives this time.
The farmer has done this to thousands of yukkuris, and usually, he counts on the one suriviving yukkuri to go back to its clan and tell the others to stay away from the scary human's vegetable patch. However, his logic is flawed--when the survivor goes home, the other yukkuris don't believe her, thinking she is trying to keep all the vegetables for herself, and before long, the survivor forgets her frightening experience.
The farmer catches a Reimu in his vegetable patch and hangs her up to begin another round.
